李光耀在千禧年把冷氣機讚為廿世紀最偉大的發明the greatest invention of the20th century was the air conditioner,因為它提升了熱帶的生產力;美國作家 Henry Miller則在 The Air-Conditioned Nightmare的書中,批評沒有一個地方像美國這樣人與大自然徹底離異 Nowhere else in the world is the divorce between man and nature socomplete,而禍首是冷氣。
America has embraced air conditioningwith a vengeance美國人熱切迎向冷氣;現在它不但是泰半不在熱帶的美國人生活的必須品necessity,更造就了美國南方崛起 the rise of the South。
美國企業鍾情於冷氣另一証明是紐約時報六月底刊登的曼哈頓商家冷氣強度調查報告,聲稱越高檔的商家,冷氣越強 the more ritzythe establishment is trying to be, the colder the air-conditioning is kept,換言之,價錢越高,店中溫度越低 In other words, the higher the prices, the lower thetemperatures。
Bergdorf Goodman:68.3
Hermes:68.6
Tiffany & Co.:70.3
Bloomingdale’s:70.8
Macy’s:73.1
Club Monaco:74
National Wholesale Liquidators:76.6
Levi’s Store:76.8
Old Navy:80.3(以上溫度均為華氏)
